49 years of giro
Il Giro di San Francisco, originally launched as the “San Francisco Gran Prix” in 1975 by the San Francisco Columbus Day Celebration Committee, has become a Bay Area Labor Day tradition in cycling. Over the decades, it has evolved into a celebrated criterium race drawing elite racers, local amateurs, juniors, and spectators alike.
For 49 years this event has energized San Francisco’s cycling community—bringing fierce track action, lively support on the streets, and a day-long celebration of sport.
Top Bay Area pros, developing juniors, masters, and amateur cyclists contend in an action‑packed spectacle. Some of its early editions were even held on Laguna-inspired turns of Lombard Street—a nod to San Francisco’s iconic terrain.
